Simplify your large-scale projects
Our expertise and high-throughput capabilities make us the ideal partner for large extraction projects, whether you have dozens or tens of thousands of samples.
Let us streamline your extensive sequencing projects by performing DNA extractions for you:
- High-throughput, automated workflows.
- Oversight and judgement by microbial genomics experts.
- Consistent processing across large studies.
- Reduce time spent on logistics by using our CoOrdinated Management and Processing for Accelerated Sequencing Services (COMPASS) system.
Beyond standard: tailored solutions for complex needs
Some sample types need more than a standard workflow. For difficult matrices and larger custom programs, our team can develop and validate a tailored extraction approach with you.

Service specifications: precision and care in every step
48+ samples
- We offer our COMPASS system for CoOrdinated Management and Processing for Accelerated Sequencing Services.
- COMPASS allows for the fastest processing and the lowest price!
- You will receive a custom shipping container with validated plasticware, stabilization buffer, & prepaid shipping label at no additional charge.
24-48 samples
- Must be sent in a 96-well plate.
- 96-well plates should be fully skirted and sealed well with a foil seal (plastic seals are very prone to leaking during shipping)
1-23 samples
- We accept individual 1.5 mL tubes that are well-labeled and organized.
- 50-100mg, supernatant removed.
- Dry ice
- Must have enough growth to easily collect 50-100mg of colonies.
- Ice packs or room temperature
- Include padding to prevent petri plates from being smashed/contaminated during transit.
- Sample must be homogenized and able to be transferred to a new tube using a pipette.
- We will only be able to take forward 200ul of homogenized sample into our extraction workflow.
- Room temperature, on ice packs, or on dry ice.
- Submit pre-loaded into bead-beating tubes.
- We recommend MagMax Microbiome Bead Beating Tubes, but any 2ml screw-cap tube with bead beating matrix is acceptable.
- Ship frozen on dry ice for most sample types.
Sample biomass
- Sufficient sample biomass (ex: ~1 × 109 E. coli cells is sufficient).
- Pure, uncontaminated growth.
- It is okay to streak multiple strains per plate, provided there is enough available biomass and care is taken to avoid contamination.
- For best results, dry your agar plates on the bench for a day or two prior to inoculating and incubating to avoid excessive condensation.
Insufficient Biomass
Sufficient Biomass
Sufficient for short reads, insufficient for long reads
Please send
All samples must be securely packaged in a clean, organized fashion using secondary containment. Leaking samples will be immediately disposed of, as required by our biosafety measures.
Please do not send
Bags of tubes, individual tubes wrapped in parafilm, large-format tubes (e.g. 50ml conicals), non-sterile/soft-sided containers (e.g. plastic bags), unsealed cell culture 96-well plates. We’ve seen it all! Please double-check your shipments to ensure your samples make it to us safe and sound.
Frequently Asked Questions
What sample types can be used for DNA extraction?
We accept bacterial cultures, fungal cultures, stool, soil, sediment, wastewater, swabs, algae samples, filters, and more! Please refer to our Sample Prep Guidelines for more details.
Can SeqCoast perform DNA extraction for metagenomic sequencing?
Yes! Our extraction workflows are compatible with metagenomics, microbiome sequencing, shotgun sequencing, and other NGS applications involving mixed species. We use bead-beating to ensure thorough lysis, even for tough-to-lyse microbes.
Do you offer high-throughput DNA extractions?
All the time! SeqCoast regularly processes large-scale projects ranging from a few dozen to thousands of samples using our automated & scalable extraction workflows and our COMPASS project management system.
